Take a Journey from Roads to Rails

B&O Railroad Museum

Before the days of planes, trains and automobiles, there were stagecoaches and Conestoga wagons, which provided the quickest form of land travel. This is where you begin your journey in the new experience, “America Transformed: From Roads to Rails” at the birthplace of American railroading. During this experience, journey back to 1827 and see how a small group of Baltimore businessmen came together to fund a new type of transportation, the B&O Railroad. Their vision and determination helped lay the first 13 miles of rail in America, creating a web of iron and steel that would transform our nation. Learn about the first American-built steam locomotive; see how the B&O also helped with the implementation of the 19th century’s other major life-changing invention, the telegraph; and more. Your final stop will be an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the B&O Office Car #908, a private rail car that was used by railroad executives, businessmen and even U.S. presidents. All aboard!
