Unfurl History – and Our National Symbol

Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine

Flag Talk

We all feel immense pride each time we lay our eyes on the American flag or hear the opening notes of our national anthem. But did you know that each of these iconic American symbols have roots in our city – specifically, at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine? In the exciting, interactive Flag Talk, join a National Park Service ranger in unrolling the 30-by-42-foot, replica Star-Spangled Banner flag on the site where it flew 200 years ago. Hear about the inspiring connection between the 15-star, 15-stripe Star-Spangled Banner flag and Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814 when Francis Scott Key wrote the words to “The Star-Spangled Banner.” You’ll learn the history of the flag that became a symbol for the city, the state and the nation and recite – and understand – the words of the national anthem.
