Vendors, art exhibit, lectures, and more! The Orchid – the largest and most diverse flowering plant family on earth, loved for its unmatched exotic beauty – will be in the spotlight at the Rawlings Conservatory. The Conservatory, in partnership with the Maryland Orchid Society (MOS) and the Friends of the Rawlings Conservatory, will be hosting this orchid display, art exhibit, and program series to celebrate the completion of the renovation of the Orchid Room, which is one of the original 1888 structures. Through the duration, MOS members will be on hand for discussion and questions – some will bring prize-winning plants from their own collections. There will be a selection of plants and potting materials for sale. The exhibit and most programs are free, though donations are gladly accepted. $5 per person recommended. Friday, September 30, 1 p.m. – FREE lecture Orchid Botany 101—An Introduction to Orchids with Sarah Spence. Friday, September 30 – Sunday, October 2 – FEATURED VENDOR, The Little Greenhouse,orchid specialists, will be selling orchids and tropicals from their shop on Harford Road. Wednesday, October 5, 10 – 11 a.m. – FREE orchid potting demonstration with Alice Hisley and Bob Johnston Wednesday, October 5, 6 – 8 p.m. – Artists Reception The exhibition and reception are both free and open to the public, although donations are gratefully accepted. Meet the artists, and view the exhibit in the enchanting lighting and atmosphere of the Conservatory after dark. Some artwork is for sale and proceeds from sales will be donated to the Conservatory. Thursday, October 6, 1 – 4 p.m. & 5 – 8 p.m. – Wine and Paint, $35/person, registration required. All materials will be provided. 1 glass of wine and light refreshments included, additional libations and snacks will be available for purchase – cash only.
A professional artist will lead you step-by-step to recreate an original painting of an orchid variety from the celebration. Painting is a great way to relax and socialize! Absolutely NO experience is necessary. The artist will guide you and teach you some new skills. Just bring your creativity and prepare to have fun!
