March 10, 2016

Fiddler, composer, producer and educator, Darol Anger is one the foremost fiddlers on the planet, known for versatility and depth, and his comfort across numerous genres, some which he helped to invent. Anger has helped drive the evolution of the contemporary string band through his involvement with numerous ensembles, including the Turtle Island String Quartet, the David Grisman Quintet, and his duo with Mike Marshall. Anger’s newest project, Mr. Sun, is an insanely thrilling collaboration of four American string-band virtuosos from three different generations and diverse musical backgrounds. Moving through soaring melodies, titillating solos, groovy rhythms, and fluid time changes with both personality and unimaginable finesse, Mr. Sun offers a kaleidoscopic fusion of jazz, bluegrass and classical themes. Alongside Anger is Joe Walsh on mandolin (Gibson Brothers, himself), Grant Gordy on guitar (David Grisman, Jake Schepps), and Ethan Jodziewicz on acoustic bass. The High and Wides: Sam Guthridge (banjo/mandolin) and Marc Dykeman (guitar), veterans of the bluegrass band Chester River Runoff, join with friend and upright bass player Mike Buccino to create a progressive sound that seems to skip a recent generation of pickers, drawing influence from rockabilly and an earlier era of bluegrass, but with extended breaks and unique time signatures to create a wild and wonderful newness. 8pm | $18, $15 mbrs. | +$3 at the door
