Rawlings Conservatory presents Festival of Fabrics: Color from the Earth, an art exhibition and workshop series. The exhibit showcases natural dyed fabrics made during a series of free public workshops. The exhibition will run from October 3-11, 2015 at the H.P. Rawlings Conservatory located in Druid Hill Park. The Conservatory is open Wednesday - Sunday, and there will be an opening reception on Friday, October 2, from 5 - 7 p.m. Artists Claire Fredrick and Ashton Page of Wax and Wane Fiber collaborate with curator Gloria Azucena to produce the free workshop series and exhibition. These workshops ran from July to September during the Druid Hill Farmers Market in the Conservatory’s South Pavilion. Workshop participants learned about the different natural color dyes -- indigo, logwood, sappenwood, cochineal, and tea leaves -- and the various techniques -- shibori, batik, ombre toning, and eco-printing. Over 70 members of the community participated in creating a collaborative tapestry using the natural dyes and fiber techniques. In the exhibition, the tapestries will be displayed along with the history and use of each dye and technique. The fabrics will transform the room through the ample amount of natural light through the conservatory windows. The vibrant colors correlate with the plants and flowers in the botanical rooms of the Conservatory: Tropical House, Mediterranean House, Orchid Room, Palm House, and Desert Room. The audience is invited to learn about the techniques used in artworks and the uses of each plant.
