October 11, 2016 - October 17, 2016

BALTIMORE – The War of 1812 is regarded as "The Golden Age  of Sail" of U.S. Naval history as the United States took its place on the world maritime stage. To commemorate over 200 years of American sea power, special programs are planned from October 11-17, 2016 at Fort McHenry.

The signature events will be the parade of modern military vessels – the "grey hulls," that will pass Fort McHenry on its way to Baltimore's Inner Harbor; the U.S. Navy Blue Angels' Air Show; and War of 1812 fife and drum concerts by the Fort McHenry Guard Field Music.

The activities include commemorative and living history ceremonies and Park Ranger led interpretive programs to highlight the maritime War of 1812 on the Chesapeake Bay.

All programs are included in the regular Fort McHenry entrance fee of $10.00 per adult, 16 and older (under 16 are admitted free).  Admission is free with a National Park Service pass or Fort McHenry annual park pass. No Fort admission fees will be charged on Saturday, October 15 or Sunday, October 16 during the U.S. Navy Blue Angels Air Shows.

On September 13-14, 1814, Maryland lawyer Francis Scott Key, while witnessing the British naval attack on Fort McHenry from an American flag-of-truce vessel wrote his song, "The Defence of Fort McHenry." The verses were quickly set to a popular English melody, The Anacreontic Song, and Key's creation quickly became popular as "The Star-Spangled Banner."
