An African American Journey
Mark Cottman Gallery
January 26 - February 27

The African American Journey will highlight in cross section the contributions of individuals, historical events and imagery. Featured will be paintings of Rosa Parks, Cornel West, Toni Morrison, Richard Pryor, and many more.

Also featured is the book The Other Annapolis written by Philip L. Brown. "The Other Annapolis is an account of the life of "colored" Annapolitans during the period from 1900 to 1950 from the prospective of those who lived it."

Celebrate Black History Month at the B&O

B&O Railroad Museum

Celebrate the contributions of African Americans to the railroad industry. Learn about these men and women who filled vital jobs along the B&O Railroad's line and understand how significant social issues, such as segregation, affected railroading.

Cultural Series: African-American Heritage
National Aquarium in Baltimore
February 3, 2012

The National Aquarium's Cultural Series will celebrate Black History Month with an event that honors the black watermen who worked along the Chesapeake Bay. There will also be an oyster tonging exhibit, an art exhibit by the students at the Renaissance Academy, an African drum performance, arts and crafts, and dance performances.

From Fortune to Henrietta Lacks and Beyond

This panel discussion will examine ethics in medical education, research, treatment, and practice and explore the parallels between Fortune's story and that of Henrietta Lacks. Panelists include: Professor Taunya Lovell-Banks, University of Maryland School of Law; Dr. Curt Civin, University of Maryland School of Medicine; David Lacks, son of Henrietta Lacks; Ysaye Barnwell, composer and curator of the Fortune's Bones Project. Moderator: Kojo Nnamdi, WAMU-FM.
