The Star-Spangled Banner Weekend honors Defenders’ Day, Baltimore’s oldest holiday commemorating the bombardment of Fort McHenry and the writing of our National Anthem. Weekend activities are free to the public.

On Friday evening, the public celebration starts with a parade of re-enactors marching from the base of Federal Hill to the top, where a special ceremony will take place. The re-enactors will board sailing boats and return with the 30’ x 42’ replica flag to Fort McHenry.

Saturday and Sunday daytime activities at the Fort will include a dress parade, flag raisings, cannon firing demonstrations, and presentations by re-enactors and living history interpreters. The Saturday evening public program will begin approximately 6:00 p.m. and feature tactical demonstrations, traditional music, and a re-enactment of the bombardment of the Fort. The highlight of Saturday evening will be a spectacular fireworks display commemorating the bombardment of the Fort and the defense of Baltimore.
