Shiny & New will be exhibited at Pixilated Federal Hill Sunday, January 24th through Friday, February 19th. Kate Bancroft paints the type of super hot women that are glorified by contemporary media: the young, the fit, the gorgeous, the enviable. Epitomizing media-prescribed contemporary beauty standards, the women in her paintings are often working toward self improvement in their appearance. In inoffensive, friendly, candy-colored palettes, she places the bodies on the surface of the painting more like an abstract composition than a classical figure painting. She applies the paint to work towards a slick, smooth, “Pop-Art” finish; however, she leaves elements of the painting raw, unresolved or in-progress, as in the way women are encouraged to regard their bodies and themselves as things that are never ready or finished.
