Baltimore Heritage Walk and Cultural Walk

Explore Baltimore’s unique history through guided walking tours provided by the Baltimore National Heritage Area. Tour popular urban trails: Heritage Walk and Cultural Walk. Heritage Walk takes visitors from the visitor center at the Inner Harbor to the Little Italy and Jonestown neighborhoods. Cultural Walk allows travelers to experience the Mount Vernon Historic District, thecity’s cultural heart. Each tour departs from the Inner Harbor Visitor Center.
Pennsylvania Avenue Heritage Trail

The two-mile trail takes visitors through the historic Bolton Hill and Upton neighborhoods, with stops highlighting historic places that speak to the neighborhoods’ African American history. The trail’s numerous “Star Attraction” sites celebrate Baltimore’s jazz roots, the city’s place at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement, and the social, educational, and religious institutions that provided a foundation for the fight for equality.

A new map and guide will be available for visitors to explore the maritime traditions and rich history of this eclectic and charming neighborhood. The guide touches upon Fell’s Point’s connections to the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, and the civil rights pioneers who once walked along the Belgian-block streets.
Material Girls: Contemporary Black Women Artists

Curated by Dr. Michelle Joan Wilkinson, director of collections and exhibitions at the museum, this exhibition features eight contemporary female artists who create thought-provoking, three-dimensional art using green-friendly materials including both natural (human hair, stone, brick, etc.) and recyclable materials (rubber tires, plastic bags, glass, etc.)

Puzzles of the Brain: An Artist’s Journey Through Amnesia

Approximately 36 works exploring the impact of severe brain damage on the life and creativity of an artist. The show tells the story of Lonni Sue Johnson, a successful artist, who suffered severe amnesia resulting from an attack of encephalitis in late 2007. Johnson’s case gives researchers a rare opportunity to contribute to the scientific understanding of brain function and art, and to apply that understanding to an appreciation of the synergies between art and science.

Discover more than 80 visually engaging objects used in daily life in Africa that brilliantly merge artistry and utility. These beautiful domestic works represent 21 African countries: Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Malawi, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, and Zambia. A selection of videos and photographs will show how the objects were created and used.

Lost & Found: The Secrets of Archimedes

In Jerusalem in 1229 AD the greatest works of the Greek mathematician Archimedes were erased and overwritten with a prayer book by a priest called Johannes Myronas. In the year 2000 a project was begun by a team of experts at the Walters to read these erased texts. By the time they had finished, the team that worked on the book had recovered Archimedes’ secrets, rewritten the history of mathematics and discovered entirely new texts from the ancient world. This exhibition will recount the history of the book, detail the patient conservation, explain the cutting-edge imaging and highlight the discoveries of the determined scholars who finally read what had been obliterated.

Embroidered Treasures: Textiles from Central Asia

Approximately fourteen bold, colorful embroidered textiles from Central Asia are being presented for the first time at the BMA. These stunning late 19th- to early 20th-century textiles include wall hangings, covers, a wedding canopy, and saddle cover made in Uzbekistan and areas of Afghanistan. Primarily made of cotton with multicolored silk thread embroidery by young women and their female relatives, many of these textiles were used as part of their dowries and family treasures that were reluctantly parted with during periods of political and economic hardship.

The War Came By Train

The War Came By Train serves as the B&O Railroad Museum’s primary attraction for the five year commemoration of the War’s sesquicentennial. The National Landmark Roundhouse will exhibit the largest assemblage of Civil War railroad equipment in the World featuring locomotives and rail cars that served during the war, significant military and personal artifacts that will change annually to portray each year of the war (some artifacts have never before been on public display), and a narrated, round trip train ride to the original site of Camp Carroll, the largest Union encampment in Baltimore.
