Lacrosse in Baltimore
Baltimore is home to the Ravens, the Orioles, and even the Major Indoor Soccer League’s Baltimore Blast, but the city’s heart belongs to Maryland’s official team sport, lacrosse. Known as the oldest sport in North America, lacrosse was played by Native American tribes for centuries before it became popular on college campuses throughout the Great Lakes region and along the East Coast during the late 1800s, with the University of Maryland fielding its first team in 1910. In fact, when lacrosse made its Olympic debut in 1928, it was the Johns Hopkins University’s team that represented the United States.
No other region in the United States has embraced and fostered lacrosse like the greater Baltimore area. Five of the nation’s top ranked men’s collegiate teams, including the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, the US Naval Academy, University of Maryland Baltimore County and Loyola University, are situated in Maryland and women’s lacrosse was virtually invented here, with the Bryn Mawr School fielding the first women’s team in the nation. With such depth and breadth of lacrosse programs throughout the area, powerhouse players from this region’s high school and prep school teams are hotly recruited by colleges and universities all over the country.
Baltimore is also the proud home of US Lacrosse, the sport’s governing body, and the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, situated adjacent to Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Field. In addition, each winter, Baltimore welcomes lacrosse players, coaches, administrators, vendors and fans to the US Lacrosse National Convention at the Baltimore Convention Center. Baltimore is also home to the sport’s only major publication, the ESPN-affiliated Inside Lacrosse, as well as major equipment manufacturers and distributors. In short, Baltimore is Lacrosse Heaven, and we welcome you to it.
