Where The Wild Things Art

Join The Painted Palette at the Maryland Zoo for a wildly entertaining night of painting and sipping with your favorite animal ambassador friends! Summer Socials at West Shore Park

Bring a blanket and enjoy a fun, family-friendly evening at West Shore Park every second Friday from May through September. Summer Socials feature live music by a local band, kids activities, food trucks, bar service and the Walter Sondheim Interactive Fountain. Summer Socials are always free and fun to attend!

Navy Tattoo Ceremony
Aug. 11 | 6 – 8 p.m. | Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine
Over 100 years ago, Baltimore residents spent Saturday evenings watching the military review of soldiers at Fort McHenry and the tradition lives on today. The United States Navy Band, Drill Team, and Color Guard will be performing military drills and music performances inside the historic Star Fort. Fort McHenry's very own Fort McHenry Guard will present musket and cutlass drills. At the end of the program visitors will join the Fort McHenry Guard at the water battery for a salute of cannon fire and taps.

Family Fun Days
Aug. 19 | 12 – 4 p.m. | Power Plant Live!
Join Port Discovery Children's Museum Sunday, August 19th for a Carnival inspired Family Fun Day featuring hula hoops, pony rides, themed crafts and food. Entry is free but purchase an activities pass and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Civic Works.

Corn Moon Hike

Have you ever heard of the “Back Hills” in Druid Hill Park? Well, this is your chance to hike the Jones Falls Trail that runs through Druid Hill Park, as well as the old roads that travel along the back side of The Maryland Zoo after dark! This walk is roughly a 5-mile loop on paved surfaces with several hills.

Thomas Dolby: An Evening of Music and Storytelling

Conservation Window

Come see conservators at work! The Walters’ Conservation and Technical Research Lab, founded in 1934, is the third oldest museum laboratory in the country. The Conservation Window provides visitors with an opportunity to watch and learn from the Walters' conservators as they work on objects from the collection.

1 West: Restoring a Library
Aug. 2 | 6:30 –7:15 p.m. | The Walters Art Museum
One of the most interesting rooms in the newly renovated 1 West Mount Vernon Place is the library. Eric Gordon, Head of Painting Conservation, and Meg Craft, Head of Objects Conservation, will discuss the changes in the library’s architecture over time and the discoveries they made within its walls. Learn about the painstaking conservation efforts they used to bring the space back to its 19th-century splendor.

1 West: A Seat at the Table

Ceramics artist Roberto Lugo will investigate the history and context of social interactions in the 19th century through the lens of his new installation in 1 West Mount Vernon Place. He will be joined by artist Ezenwa “Shane” Wosu in a participatory performance piece and explore the question of “Who gets a seat at the table?”

Mindfulness in the Galleries

Participate in an hour-long meditation session followed by a 15-minute docent-led discussion about the surrounding artwork. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat or towel if you have one.

1 West Make Night: Bookmaking

Lynley Herbert, Assistant Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, will speak about some of the interesting books on view in the newly renovated library at 1 West Mount Vernon Place. Following her talk, learn how to make a bound book inspired by the collection with instructor, Kelly Laughlin.

Kuba: Fabric of an Empire

This exhibition of dazzling Kuba textiles presented in the BMA’s Cone Collection galleries reveals how a central African kingdom independently developed a form of modernist abstraction in the 20th century. The Kuba kingdom, on the southern edge of the Congolese Rainforest in central Africa, developed one of the greatest civilizations in the history of the continent. Art and design were central to their life.

Screening & Film Release: Reginald F. Lewis Museum

"Baltimore's Strange Fruit: A Story of Food Apartheid and the Struggle for Sovereignty" is a documentary film produced by Black Yield Institute, directed by Eric Jackson and Maddie Hardy. The film explores the intersections of food, land, and race and class politics through personal narrative and social commentary. The film journeys through the historical woes and triumphs of people of African Descent within the food system, while highlighting contemporary efforts to address the complex nature of food apartheid in Baltimore.

PDPS 50th Anniversary

In the fall of 2018, the BMA’s oldest friends group, the Print, Drawing & Photograph Society (PDPS), will celebrate its 50th anniversary by sponsoring an exhibition to highlight a selection of late 19th-century, modern, and contemporary works on paper that PDPS has helped the BMA acquire over the years. This one gallery exhibition will be organized in two six-month presentations, each including 20–30 prints, drawings, and artists’ books. The crown jewel of the group’s celebration is the gift to the museum’s collection of Joan Miró’s Plate 6 from the “Black and Red Series."

Baltimore Art, Antique and Jewelry Show

The 38th annual Baltimore Art, Antique & Jewelry Show welcomes art and antique enthusiasts to spend their Labor Day Weekend indulging in treasures from the last several thousand years. The show features fine art, furniture, Asian art, American and European silver, jewelry, porcelain, glass, textiles, American folk art and much more from over 350 exhibitors from around the world.
