Baltimore To Host First Light Festival in the United States

Baltimore will welcome a new festival in March 2016, Light City Baltimore. Taking place March 28 through April 3, this event will be the first large-scale, international light festival in the United States. Light City will shine a light on Baltimore’s abundance of creative, cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary talent, and we welcome participants from across the globe to join us. Light City will have educational programming during the day, while light installations conceived by artists and live music performances will take over at night.

New Developments in Baltimore

Baltimore is experiencing an influx of exciting new developments and construction projects throughout the city. Kevin Plank, the founder and CEO of Under Armour, is currently working on expanding the brand’s headquarters to Port Covington in South Baltimore. Plank is also working to redevelop the former Recreation Pier in Fell’s Point to become a boutique hotel.

Another exciting project in the works, Inner Harbor 2.0, will upgrade many of the features of Baltimore’s beloved Inner Harbor – which is more than 40 years old. Inner Harbor 2.0 plans to add quality open spaces, parks, playgrounds, interactive water features and artwork to respond to our changing values and needs. The plan also adds landscaping and shade areas, and proposes new opportunities for enjoying the area by bike and by water.

BWI Expands to Accommodate More International Visitors

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is located just 10 miles south of the city and is easily accessible by shuttle service, taxi cab, Uber, and the Light Rail. BWI’s expansion has contributed to a 27 percent surge in international visitation. Increased international options such as Condor, WOW, and Southwest Airlines – BWI’s largest carrier – has opened the door for groups with a more international attendee base to consider Baltimore as a meetings and leisure travel destination.

Hotel Openings and Renovations

This summer, Baltimore welcomed three new boutique hotels to the city – The Ivy, Hotel Indigo and the Hotel RL. Additionally, the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court and the Hyatt Regency Baltimore both recently completed extensive renovations and improvements to their properties.
