Cathy Park Hong: An Asian American Reckoning

UMBC’s Humanities Forum presents Cathy Park Hong, poet, essayist and New York Times best-selling author, on the subject of An Asian American Reckoning.

Poet and essayist Cathy Park Hong will read from and speak about her memoir, Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning. Minor Feelings is a vulnerable, humorous and provocative essay collection, whose relentless pursuit of vital questions around family and friendship, art and politics, identity and individuality, will change the way you think about our world.

Cathy Park Hong’s New York Times bestselling book of creative nonfiction, Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning (One World/Random House, 2020), was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and winner of the 2020 National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography. Hong was recognized on TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2021 for the book. She is the author of poetry collections Engine Empire (W.W. Norton, 2012), Dance Dance Revolution (W.W. Norton, 2007), which was chosen by Adrienne Rich for the Barnard Women Poets Prize, and Translating Mo’um (Hanging Loose Press, 2002). Hong is the recipient of the Windham-Campbell Prize, the Guggenheim Fellowship, and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. Her prose and poetry have been published in The New York Times, New Republic, the Guardian, Paris Review, Poetry magazine and elsewhere. She is the poetry editor at the New Republic and is a professor of English at Rutgers-Newark University, where she also teaches in the Creative Writing MFA Program.
