Harry Appelman Trio

Pianist Harry Appelman and his jazz trio, featuring drummer Eric Kennedy and bassist Jeff Reed, will perform original compositions and their takes on jazz standards and songs from the Great American Songbook.

One of D.C.’s most in-demand jazz artists, pianist and educator Harry Appelman has performed on concert stages on five continents. He has been chosen three times to participate in U.S. State Department music tours overseas, and has also performed in Egypt with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the Todd Marcus Quartet, at the Festival Gnaouas et Musiques du Monde in Essaouira, Morocco and the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Appelman was a long-time member of Afro Bop Alliance, winners of a 2008 Latin Grammy, and he contributed several arrangements to the group’s recordings. He has also played with many other of the greats on today’s jazz scene, including Eddie Daniels, Gary Thomas, Drew Gress, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, Jim Snidero, Brian Lynch, Don Braden, and Walt Weiskopf, among others. A two-time recipient of Maryland State Arts Council awards, he was also a prizewinner in the 1988 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition and the 1989 Great American Jazz Piano Competition.

A Baltimore native, Eric Kennedy is a drummer, vocalist, percussionist, educator and composer who has performed, toured and recorded with Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Heath, Gary Bartz, Phil Woods, Curtis Lundy, Bobby Watson, Gary Thomas, Fred Wesley, Wallace Roney, Ethel Ennis, Larry Willis, Lisle Atkinson, Cecil McBee, Donald Harrison, Joe Locke, Eric Alexander, Nnena Freelon, John Hicks, Richard Wyands, Yusef Salim, Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, Joe Bonner, Carl Grubbs, David Murray, Oliver Lake, Pansori master Ahn Sook Sun and many others. He is a bandleader, a member of several ensembles, and had the honor of being the last drummer/vocalist for The Holmes Brothers.

Bassist Jeff Reed has performed extensively throughout the east coast and in thirty countries worldwide, including Italy, Spain, Egypt, Turkey and Bahrain. He has shared the stage with such notable musicians as Billy Hart, Ben Monder, Steve Davis, Tim Hagans, Shelia Jordan, Eddie Henderson, Paquito D’Rivera, John Hicks, Bunky Green, Larry Willis, Ronnie Mathews, Gary Thomas and George Colligan. Reed currently is the acoustic and electric bass instructor at Towson University and Howard community college.
