Painting an American Grace, Mary Anne Caton Patterson: A Conversation with Early Baltimore Historian Lance Humphries, PhD

Join us as we unveil a newly acquired portrait of one of “the American Graces”—Mary Anne Caton Patterson (1788–1853), painted by leading British portrait painter of the time, Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769–1830). Learn what this acquisition reveals about early Baltimore and Mary Anne’s life as Mrs. Robert Patterson, before she became an international celebrity.

Presented by Lance Humphries, PhD, Executive Director of Mount Vernon Place Conservancy, with Mark B. Letzer, President & CEO at the Maryland Center for History and Culture.

This spring the Maryland Center for History and Culture pulls back the curtain on our collections through the FSK from Home Series—the virtual offering of our traditional Francis Scott Key Lecture Series. Connect with MCHC staff and our colleagues as they reveal the stories behind the objects we preserve, interpret, and display. When registering, please consider donating to the FSK from Home Giving Challenge to help us continue presenting these stellar virtual programs.
