Reflections in Nature

Join Kelly Laughlin of Odette Press for a creative retreat in nature held at Manor Mill! The creative retreat will be divided into three workshops:

Suminagashi, 10:30 A.M. – 12 P.M.: Suminagashi, the Japanese form of paper marbling, translates as “floating ink” or “spilled ink”. In this class, explore the creative, meditative process of suminagashi-style paper marbling. You’ll be guided through the history of suminagashi, a suminagashi demonstration, along with instruction on how to create a marbling set up at home, and you’ll leave with a collection of swirling, organic, water-painted marbled paper. Connect to fluidity, ink, breath, creative practice and nature.

Bookbinding, 1 P.M. – 2:30 P.M. : Notebooks, diaries and sketchbooks have been used throughout time to gather observations, learn from the world and lived experiences, and to reflect on life. By focusing on observations, journals and sketchbooks can be places to explore mindful practice and connection with the world. In this class, you’ll learn pamphlet stitch bookbinding and create a notebook with pockets for gathering and collecting. Includes discussion, bookbinding demo & kit to use in class + take home materials.

Journaling, 3PM-4PM: Journaling is a powerful tool for creative reflection that can support presence with our inner worlds and our lives. In this workshop, you’ll explore different mindful writing prompts and reflective practices meant to inspire you on the journaling page and out in the world. Discover how journaling can draw you closer to nature, and how wandering in nature can serve as a point of inspiration for a journaling practice. This class will be held outside.
