Theatre Morgan presents PIPELINE by Dominique Morisseau

Theatre Morgan is especially excited to showcase the talents of student designers in this production!

“Sometimes people push you too far. Make you feel like an animal from another jungle. Like you don’t belong even when you’re here.”

– Jasmine (Pipeline)

Is “the system” so stacked against young Black and Brown children that it’s virtually impossible to avoid the “school to prison pipeline”? This is the story of a mother’s desperate attempt to keep her son out of the “Pipeline” and the unexpected consequences of her actions. Nya, a mother and teacher tries her best to uplift her inner-city students and to keep her only son, Omari, on the right path. Omari currently faces expulsion for an incident at his private school now Nya must look deep within to determine the cause of Omar‘s anger and issues.

Dominique Morisseau’s play shines a spotlight on an urgent and needed conversation about what should be unrelated topics, the school system and the prison system. Pipeline explores the “school to prison pipeline” which sends children from underfunded and underserved schools straight to largely funded prisons. Morisseau is the author of The Detroit Project (A 3-Play Cycle) which includes the following plays: Skeleton Crew (Atlantic Theater Company), Paradise Blue (Signature Theatre), and Detroit ’67 (Public Theater, Classical Theatre of Harlem and NBT). Additional plays include: Sunset Baby (LAByrinth Theatre); Blood at the Root (National Black Theatre) and Follow Me to Nellie’s (Premiere Stages). She is also the TONY nominated book writer on the new Broadway musical Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations (Imperial Theatre), and most recently served as Co-Producer on the Showtime series “Shameless” (3 seasons).

Directed by Dwight R.B. Cook and showcasing the talents of actors, Jade Jones, Brandon Shaw McKnight, Yasmeen Mahdi, Antonio Peace, and Autumn Weisz. Other members of the creative team include John-Robert Schroyer (Tech. Director), and a team of student designers: Brianna Morrison (Set design), James Gallmon (Light and Costume design) Jade Jones (Sound design), Andrea Blanchard (Costume design), Sharlene Clinton (Costume class instructor), Jasmine Adams (Flyer image)
