Overview

Afro House Disruptive. Music. Culture New Mixolo host, Afro House, is a music-driven performance art house, founded and launched in 2011 by Scott and Alisha Patterson. Since introducing their Afro House Concert Series in 2017 showcasing Baltimore’s dynamic makers, from musicians to local food and beverage entrepreneurs, to tech innovators, they have garnered acclaim, recently recognized as a noteworthy concert series by Baltimore magazine. Afro House is launching their most ambitious project to date and we are going to join them on their journey to their premiere of Afro Punk Ballet slated for October 2018. Join us on Saturday, July 14, 2014 for “Two Suns and a Bunch of Punks,” their fundraiser and preview of the futuristic opera-ballet at Single Carrot Theatre, a vanguard alternative theater performance space in the heart of Remington, also home to the highly acclaimed Single Carrot Theatre Ensemble. The Astronaut Symphony, an ensemble of contemporary symphonic performance artists, will treat us to an arc-bending, extended warm up to full production in October. About the production: Co-produced with Annex Theater, the “go-to for experimental theater and interdisciplinary performance in Baltimore,” Afro Punk Ballet is a beautifully and literally orchestrated collision of 18th century French Baroque lyric theater that combines elements of opera and ballet, southern gospel music and sounds and experiences from punk rock music and the Afro-punk movement. The otherworldly story by Eric T. Styles, Preston Andrew Patterson and Scott Patterson, is an epic tale with an apocalyptic backdrop in a world with a man-made second sun. Scott Patterson is the composer and librettist, Preston Andrew Patterson is the choreographer and Evan Mortiz, Artistic Director of Annex Theater, will direct the opera-ballet. About Afro House: Afro House, where “collaboration is key and music is the thread,” is dedicated to elevating makers and creating a safe, collaborative space for expression and creativity. This fundraiser will help raise funds for their October production of Afro Punk Ballet. Small arts organizations like Afro House contribute to Baltimore’s creative and cultural economy while elevating our collective consciousness. The Afro Punk movement has its origins in the African American community among alternative music fans who were challenged with alienation in the alternative punk rock music scene as well as the African American community. Their DIY mindset sparked a renaissance of music makers less interested in conforming to what “sells” and more in expressing themselves as individual artists. First the preview, but stay tuned for more on tickets for the full production of Afro Punk Ballet at Le Mondo, yet another notable performance space for emerging artists in creative Baltimore, in October 2018. Single Carrot Theater is located in the historic Remington Neighborhood, an original Baltimore streetcar neighborhood, lately bustling with new and responsible development projects like the Theater and the popular R House Food Market. While parking is normally available, you may also want to consider ride-sharing options. From the Single Carrot Theater website: There is ample unmetered street parking located within walking distance of Single Carrot, and there are two parking lots where guests of local businesses may park for free. One is located on 26th Street, between N. Howard and Huntingdon Avenue, with entrances on 26th. The other is situated kitty-corner from the theater, on 26th between N. Howard and Mace Street, with an entrance on Mace. Parking in these lots is extremely limited, so we encourage you to look for street parking on Howard, Huntingdon, and 26th, or any other nearby streets.
