Overview

We’ll join Occasional Symphony at Baltimore Museum Art as they bring symphonic orchestral jazz (first introduced to the mainstream by the likes of Gershwin and Ellington) back to the future with featured 21st-century Steinway jazz pianist and composer, Stanley Cowell. Occasional Symphony is on a mission to share the majesty of symphonic music performances in less traditional and accessible venues, “living spaces;” this time they’ll grace the grand and historic Baltimore Museum of Art. This special fundraiser will help buoy the symphony's efforts to bring their art to the wider community. Art imitates art in Stanley Cowell’s Asian Art Suite, a composition for orchestra and jazz improvisation inspired by Asian artworks and structures in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The performance will include highlights from Atom Hearts Club Suite No. 2 by Japanese composer Takashi Yoshimatsu and Darius Milhaud's jazz-infused La Création du Monde. Fun fact: Darius Milhaud, was a prolific French 20th Century modernist composer, born in the late 1800s, and mentor of the legendary Dave Brubeck. The performance begins at 7:00 PM, however, please plan to arrive at 6:30 PM and attend the pre-performance talk with Stanley Cowell. Stanley Cowell's performance is co-sponsored by the Piano Choir, Inc, a non-profit (501(c)3 presenting educational music programs to the public.
