Overview

Maryland’s “Star-Spangled Ambassador,” PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II; the historic sloop-of-war USS CONSTELLATION; and special guest ranger Scott Sheads are offering hands-on educational programming for the whole family Saturday, April 1 through Saturday, April 8 in the heart of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The free programs explore a wide range of historic maritime themes and are fun for the whole family. FLAG TALK • Ranger Sheads will engage students of all ages in unfurling a full-size 42’x30’ flag from Fort McHenry, while telling the spectacular history of the Battle of Baltimore and Francis Scott Key’s treasured poem. OPENING AND CLOSING SALUTES • USS CONSTELLATION and PRIDE II will use their replica historic armaments to kick off and wrap up each afternoon with a bang. THE SHAPE OF SPEED • Learn how the innovative design of 19th-century Baltimore Clippers took the world by storm and revolutionized ocean travel. SIMPLE MACHINES FOR COMPLEX JOBS • For centuries, sailors hoisted and hauled heavy weights using little more than pulleys and ropes. See for yourself how much easier these “block and tackles” can make things. CUTLASS DRILL • There’s nothing more swashbuckling than a sailor with cutlass in hand, but it takes more than saying “Aye, matey” to know how to use one. Learn to use this maritime sword like the sailors of old in a controlled drill. COLORS AND LIGHTS: COMMUNICATION AT SEA • Before the emergence of radios, ships at sea communicated with each other through an intricate system of flags and lights. Let us “talk” you through it. CANNON DRILL • If the age of sail had a sound track, it was the thundering of cannons, or simply “guns,” aboard ships. Far from point-and-shoot devices, these weapons required precision teamwork. Join us to take part and learn how they worked. ACTUAL TALL SHIP RIGGING • PRIDE II will be finishing uprigging for the 2017 season and each day there is a chance to see authentic tall ship evolutions, with descriptive commentary.
