Overview

During the War of 1812, American sailors exemplified the Navy motto, semper fortis—always courageous—in their defense of Baltimore and their battles at sea. Join us in honoring America’s Navy service on Saturday, August 5 at 6:00 p.m. by attending one of Baltimore's oldest and continuous military ceremonies, the Tattoo, held at historic Fort McHenry, the 1814 birthplace of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Since 1965, this tradition has lived on during select summer weekends at Fort McHenry. This special traditional closing of the day military tattoo ceremony will feature patriotic music, military pageantry and living history with a concert by the U.S. Navy Band, Drill Team and Color Guard. Following the concert, the U.S. Navy Drill Team will perform their famous split-second timing and precision rifle drill and marching that have dazzled audiences around the world. Their host, the National Park Service's own Fort McHenry Guard, dressed in the uniforms of 1814 will demonstrate a unique naval cutlass exercise with fife and drum music from the War of 1812. The evening program concludes with the firing of cannon at the water battery, flag change and the playing of Taps. Parking is available on site. The fee for entrance into the historic Star Fort is $10 per adult (age 16 years and up). America the Beautiful National Parks Passes are also accepted. All programs are weather permitting. Visitors may also explore the exhibits and feature movie in the Visitor and Education Center. For more information please call (410) 962-4290 or visit our website.
