Overview

Location: Baltimore School of Music, 4200 St Paul Street, Baltimore, MD 21218 FREE & open to the public Join Baltimore School of Music piano faculty and students for our yearly piano masterclass! This year, our guest teacher will be Graham Yates, who runs Cypress Piano Studio near Houston, Texas. This class will take place in the Chapel at Second Presbyterian Church and is free and open to the public. Performers will be chosen by teacher recommendation from current students at Baltimore School of Music. About the artist: Graham Yates found his element when he learned that even as a pianist he did not have to play all by himself. Having appeared since then almost exclusively with singers, instrumentalists, choirs, chamber groups, pit bands and orchestras all over western Canada, Mr. Yates relocated to Texas in 2014. In Austin, he quickly grew a private teaching studio of over 35 students of all ages and abilities. He was a proud faculty and staff member of the Armstrong Community Music School, and now he runs Cypress Piano Studio near Houston. He is a summertime music coach, accompanist and children's opera music director for Spotlight on Opera at Texas State University. In 2016, he launched his own living room concert series, A Room With a Few. Graham Yates’ approach to teaching is informed by sound pedagogical training over two post-secondary degrees, and balanced by his affable personality that seeks to draw out the uniqueness of each student’s abilities and interests. He firmly believes that all people are innately musical, that musical training as a form of self-expression promotes overall well-being and self-improvement, and that piano lessons and practicing are an enjoyable journey of self-mastery and self-discovery.
