Overview

In February, our monthly lunchtime open house in downtown's landmark Chesapeake Shakespeare theatre commemorates the 200th anniversary of Frederick Douglass' birth. Did you know that Douglass participated in a Shakespeare reading club? He sometimes quoted from Othello in his own writing. During Douglass' lifetime, the African-American actor Ira Aldridge rose to fame in Europe, often performing as Shakespeare's tragic Venetian general. Scholars believe these two giants, Douglass and Aldridge, very likely were aware of each other's achievements. They certainly had much in common. Visit our theatre and join the discussion! Admission is free for our drop-in, casual open house. Bring your lunch. Our concessions will be open, selling beverages and snacks.
