The Baltimore Convention Center is the premier location in the Mid-Atlantic region for organizations wishing to host conventions, meetings, banquets and other activities. With 300,000 square feet of contiguous exhibition space, approximately 85,000 square feet of meeting space (50 rooms) and a multifunctional 36,672-square-foot ballroom, the Center is able to host a variety of events large and small.
Experience the perfect combination of advanced technologies and professional services, each successfully executed and delivered by the Center’s dedicated team, along with its partners: Centerplate (catering), Projection Presentation (audio-visual), MC Dean, Inc. (telecommunications) and Edlen (utility services), the Center brings together all of the essential elements needed for a successful event.
Green Initiatives at the Baltimore Convention Center
The Center is committed to building and implementing an innovative environmental management system that sustains the needs of daily operations and serves to educate and benefit staff, industry partners and clientele on the importance of reducing its carbon footprint.
It is the first convention center in the country to operate SOMAT, a two-part waste reduction system that reduces solid waste up to 90 percent, and produces a useable soil product.
Completed in August 2010, the Center’s 27,000-square-foot Outdoor Terrace Green Roof doubles as space for receptions or relaxation. More than half of the space is designed with drought-resistant vegetative roofing. The beds are maintained with material produced from the SOMAT system.
Eighty percent of the cleaning products used at the Center are certified as “Green Seal” or “Designed for the Environment.” This includes paper products used in the restrooms.
The Center’s VIP Suites, board room and east side restrooms have been renovated to incorporate fixtures that reduce annual water consumption by 25 percent. The performance contract with Constellation Energy has re-lamped the entire facility with energy-efficient bulbs that provide financial savings as well as reducing carbon, sulfur, nitrogen dioxide and mercury.
Preventing Waste and Giving Back at the BCC
At the end of every trade show at the Baltimore Convention Center, exhibitors break down booths and box up wares. But a lot also gets left behind — chairs, shelving units, hardware and more.
Now the BCC has found an innovative way to put those abandoned goods to use, right here in Baltimore, with its Diversion by Donation program.
Diversion by Donation is part of the BCC’s ever-evolving corporate social responsibility strategy. By working with local partners, BCC diverted 33.3% of its waste in 2017. Surplus furniture—71 tons of it—went to nonprofits like Second Chance, which provides job training for city residents. Thirty-six tons of food went to the Maryland Food Bank. Soil and plants from gardening expos found new life with Baltimore’s Department of Recreation & Parks.
BCC is able to capture and divert so many of these supplies from becoming waste by working hand-in-hand with clients before, during and after their events. When the Student & Youth Travel Association (SYTA) selected Baltimore for its 2018 Annual Conference, sustainability was built into the planning process, reports Carylann Assante, Executive Director of SYTA and SYTA Youth Foundation. SYTA was happy to take part once it knew how local organizations would benefit, she adds.
Overall, she says, “Baltimore was an incredible experience. They have a great team. They’re focused on serving their own community as well as making it a great place to hold a meeting, so they have that synergy.”
