America in Pursuit with Juana Summers
On Thursday Sept. 10, WYPR and the Maryland Center for History and Culture are partnering to welcome NPR’s America in Pursuit series to Baltimore.
All Things Considered anchor Juana Summers will moderate a live discussion exploring the First Amendment through women’s perspectives — past and present. Panelists include Dr. Carla Hayden, the 14th Librarian of Congress and current Senior Fellow at the Andrew Mellon Foundation as well as Dr. Toni Draper, the President & CEO of The Afro—one of America’s oldest, family-owned African American newspapers.
The conversation draws inspiration from Mary Katharine Goddard, the Baltimore printer, publisher, and the first woman appointed as a postmaster in the United States. In 1777, she printed the first official edition of the Declaration of Independence to include the names of the signers, placing her name at the bottom of the document as the printer. Her work stands as a powerful symbol of the intersection of journalism, public knowledge, civic participation, and democratic courage.
MCHC and NPR member tickets are $20. Non-member tickets are $30 and include drinks and light fare. Doors open at 6:00 pm and the event begins at 7:00 pm.
