Brewington Book Prize Talk and Reception

The MCHC Maritime Committee presents the 2025 Marion Brewington Book Prize to author David Gendell for “The Last Days of the Schooner America: A Lost Icon at the Annapolis Warship Factory.”

Gendell’s book explores a little-known final chapter in the life of the legendary schooner America. Drawing on archival research, oral histories and firsthand accounts, Gendell traces the vessel’s final years at the Annapolis Yacht Yard, where efforts to preserve the iconic schooner collided with the urgent demands of World War II shipbuilding. The result is a vivid portrait of a changing Chesapeake waterfront and a critical moment in Maryland’s maritime past.

Join us from 6 to 7 p.m. for a talk and reading by the author, followed at 7 pm by a light reception, book sale, and signing. Doors and the Museum Store open at 5:30 pm.
