We’re delighted to invite you to an evening of music and conversation in celebration of Don’t Count Me Out: A Baltimore Dope Fiend’s Miraculous Recovery by Rafael Alvarez! Alvarez will be joined by local musician Steve Martel.
Don’t Count Me Out chronicles the life of Bruce White from the beginning of his drug use in elementary school through criminal acts fueled by his need for drugs, to his miraculous recovery three decades later and involvement in the treatment of addicts, where he is now a leader in the rehabilitation field.
A life-long Baltimorean, Rafael Alvarez is a former City Desk reporter for the Baltimore Sun and screenwriter for “The Wire.” A graduate of Mt. St. Jospeh High School, he is the author of 12 books, both fiction and non-fiction, including the Orlo & Leini tales. Alvarez is a columnist for baltimorefishbowl.com and recently signed a contract to write a book about the Rosary.
Steve Martel wrote, recorded, and produced over 7 studio albums; 100s of songs written; 20 albums of youth music recorded; wrote and produced song for ‘Mary Jane’ for Jessica Blau’s novel of the same name. Accomplished guitarist who plays in a number of Baltimore bands including Deep Blue Railroad and The Giggmohrs. He is a teacher at the McDonogh School, and the founder and director of Rock Shop, a dynamic 20 year songwriting and performance camp for youth and adults.
