Porch Signing: Frances Altman, Destiny's Daughter
The Ivy is delighted to present a signing and meet-and-greet on our front porch, with Frances Altman, author of the recently published DESTINY’S DAUGHTER, a biography of maverick suffragist Mary Edwards Walker. The subject is timely, coming back into the spotlight, as in April, Fort A.P. Hill near Richmond will be renamed Fort Mary Walker. The U.S. Mint also will issue her portrait on a new quarter in its American Women’s Quarter series this fall.
Frances Altman has created a fifty year career in communications by blending news, public relations, marketing and freelance writing. Now retired, she worked for Field Enterprise community papers and The Chicago Sun Times, National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, Allied Signal and Virginia Commonwealth University where she also taught. She has written several hundred newspaper and magazine articles on food, community business and children’s stories for Child Life, Highlights, Weekly Reader and seven books for young readers including Escape to Freedom, Spirit Dog, Something Egg and Reggie the Goat. She earned a Master’s degree from Roosevelt University, Chicago. Destiny’s Daughter is her tenth book. Her writing has received numerous merit awards from National Federation of Press Women, National League American Pen Women, Chicago Publicity Club, Virginia and Illinois Press Associations and a TWIN Leadership Award from National YWCA.
