Robert Kanigel: Young Man, Muddled (In Conversation With Jon Shorr)

The Ivy is delighted to welcome back Robert Kanigel for a reading and conversation about his new memoir Young Man, Muddled. Robert will be joined in conversation by Jon Shorr. This event will take place in-person, outdoors, on The Ivy’s back patio.

Robert Kanigel is the author of nine previous books, most recently Hearing Homer’s Song: The Brief Life and Big Idea of Milman Parry and, before that, Eyes on the Street, his biography of Jane Jacobs. He has received many awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship, the Grady-Stack Award for science writing, and an NEH Public Scholar grant. His book The Man Who Knew Infinity was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; it has been translated into more than a dozen languages and was the basis for the film of the same name starring Jeremy Irons and Dev Patel. Kanigel and his wife, the poet S. B. Merrow, live in Baltimore.

After teaching high school English for several years, Jon Shorr earned his Ph.D. in Media Education. From 1983 until he retired in 2016, Shorr taught writing, literature, communication, and media studies courses at the University of Baltimore. Since then, he has published numerous freelance magazine articles, essays, and short stories. Currently, he produces the weekly podcast Burning Bright for Passager Books, a nonprofit publisher of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction by writers over 50, and is an active member of the Ivy #2 Book Club.
