Voices in Solidarity continues with Silenced Songs: Rediscovering the Lost Music of Jewish Composers, a program led by soprano Sara Duchovnay that restores the voices of Jewish women composers whose work was disrupted or suppressed during the Holocaust.

The afternoon combines conversation and performance, examining Jewish identity, cultural memory, and artistic resilience through scholarship and live music.

1–2:30 PM | Roundtable Discussion (Lunch Add-On Available)
A moderated panel uses vocal music as an entry point to explore historical and contemporary themes of belonging, support, solidarity and tension within Baltimore’s Black and Jewish communities. Panelists bring both professional expertise and personal experience to the conversation.

Panelists:
Nicole Steinberg, Ph.D. (Moderator) – Opera Baltimore’s Cultural Programs Coordinator and musicologist specializing in music and trauma.
Sara Duchovnay – Jewish soprano whose grandparents survived the Holocaust. Her work frequently explores Jewish identity and Holocaust history through performance.
Julia Cooke – President and General Director of Opera Baltimore, reflecting on navigating the performing arts industry as a Jewish leader.
Em Davidson – Collections Manager and Archivist at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum.

Sara Duchovnay presents Silenced Songs, a recital honoring Jewish women composers whose artistic voices were nearly erased by genocide. Through art song and vocal works, the program restores repertoire that belongs within the canon of Western classical music.

This recital has been performed internationally, including in Düsseldorf, Germany, in partnership with Maxhaus Düsseldorf and the Society for Christian-Jewish Cooperation as part of the citywide series Respect and Courage – Düsseldorf Contributions to Intercultural Understanding.
