Todd Marcus//Marc Cary//Kris Monson//Eric Kennedy

Join this band of local legends for an evening of music at An die Musik Live! Two shows at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.!

Bass clarinetist/composer Todd Marcus is one of the few jazz artists worldwide to focus their work primarily on the bass clarinet. His work over recent years has focused on his quintet and jazz orchestra but for this show, he and long-time drummer Eric Kennedy presents his quartet along with acclaimed pianist Marc Cary and bassist Kris Monson who both join the band for the first time.

Todd Marcus – bass clarinet
Marc Cary – piano
Kris Monson – bass
Eric Kennedy – drums

Todd Marcus’ straight-ahead playing has carved out a unique voice for the instrument in modern jazz. Self taught in jazz theory and composition, Marcus’ compositions draw largely on straight-ahead jazz and classical influences but over recent years have also increasingly explored the Middle-Eastern sounds from his Egyptian-American heritage. Marcus balances his music career by running Intersection of Change, a nonprofit addressing poverty related issues in his Baltimore neighborhood. www.toddmarcusjazz.com

In a jazz world brimming with brilliant and adventurous pianists, Marc Cary stands apart by way of pedigree and design. None of his prestigious peer group ever set the groove behind the drums in Washington DC go-go bands nor are any others graduates of both Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln’s daunting bandstand academies. Cary remains one of the progenitors of contemporary jazz.

Kris Monson is a versatile musician and double bassist in New York City. Kris has had the honor of working with many of the top musicians in the international jazz and contemporary music scenes, including Marc Cary, Tyshawn Sorey, Vince Mendoza, Veronica Swift, Charles Owens, and Ari Hoenig, and on stages including the Panama Jazz Festival, Providencia Jazz Festival in Santiago de Chile, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Smalls Jazz Club, and Blues Alley.

Eric Kennedy — recently awarded the Baltimore Jazz Hero Award — is an educator, vocalist, drummer and composer. Nationally, and internationally, Eric leads his own ensembles and performs regularly with the Bobby Watson Quartet, NoMad Stories, the Timmy Shepherd Group, Inside Out (a collective trio with Lafayette Gilchrist and Michael Formanek), the Larry Willis Trio, the Jeff Reed Trio, Todd Marcus Quartet, Joel Holmes Trio and Kinetic Sounds. https://bakerartist.org/…/curated-collections/erickennedy
