Virtual Panel Conversation: The Legacy of Octavia E. Butler

Are you a secret book lover of science fiction, fantasy, afrofuturism and an advocate for change? Join the Lewis Museum this evening celebrating the legacy of science fiction writer Octavia Estelle Butler. Scholars will discuss Octavia Butler’s impact on the literary genre while exploring themes of Black injustice, global warming, women’s rights and political disparity in her books. This panel includes the following scholars:

Dr. Ayanna A. H. Jaimeson is the founder of Octavia E. Butler Legacy Network. Her work centers around the intersections of critical depth psychology, race, culture, and mythology. As an interdisciplinary scholar, Ayana’s dissertation “Certainty of the Flesh”: A Biomythograchical Reading of Octavia E. Butler’s Fictions, explores Butler’s biographical origins and the mythic aspects of her literary work.

Dr. Moya Bailey is a scholar of African American, feminist, and disability studies.She is interested in how race, gender, and sexuality are represented in media and medicine. She is the founder and co-conspirator of Quirky Black Girls, a network for strange and different black girls and now serves as the digital alchemist for the Octavia E. Butler Legacy Network.

Dr. Zetta Elliott is a Black feminist writer of poetry, plays, essays, novels and stories for children. She is an advocate for greater diversity and equity in publishing, and has self-published numerous illustrated books for younger readers under her own imprint, Rosetta Press. Her book, Ship of Souls was named a Booklist Top Ten Sci-fi/Fantasy Title for Youth. Her YA novel, The Door at the Crossroads, was a finalist in the Speculative Fiction category of the 2017 Cybils Awards.

Dr. Izetta Autumn Mobley (Moderator) is the Director of Interpretation, Collections and Education at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. She has more than 15 years of experience working as a facilitator and social justice educator specializing in organizational climate and development, youth engagement, and diversity and equity.
