EJB Quartet plays Cedar Walton

Join the EJB Quartet led by Elijah Jamal Balbed at An die Musik Live! as they celebrate the musical legacy of legendary pianist Cedar Walton!

Cedar has always been one of Elijah’s biggest influences compositionally. Elijah saw Cedar a few times at the legendary, and now defunct, Washington DC venue Bohemian Caverns and even shook Mr Walton’s hand one time. Elijah has studied the Cedar Walton book extensively and is excited to present his music with this amazing quartet.

Elijah Jamal Balbed – Sax
Tim Brey – Piano
Steve Arnold – Bass
Jay Jefferson – Drums

Elijah Jamal Balbed is an award-winning, highly sought after saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist and arranger in the greater Mid-Atlantic region. Dubbed the “East Coast Assassin” by a fellow musician, Elijah can be found performing in DC, Maryland, Virginia, Philadelphia, and/or New York on any given night. As a bandleader, Elijah has headlined at Blues Alley (DC), Keystone Korner (Baltimore), Bohemian Caverns (DC), Smalls Jazz Club (NYC), Chris’ Jazz Club (Philly), South Jazz Club (Philly), The Kennedy Center (DC), Strathmore (Bethesda, MD), and has appeared as a sideman with artists/bands such as Lauryn Hill, Fantasia, The Blackbyrds, Mike Phillips, Backyard Band, Gloria Estefan, Patti Austin, Nicole Henry, and many others. Elijah is known for having performed with the Godfather of Go-Go Music – Chuck Brown (RIP) the last year of Mr. Brown’s life. In 2014, Elijah formed his own Jazz/Go-Go fusion band – The JoGo Project – an effort to continue the legacy of Chuck Brown and preserve and promote DC’s official genre of music (as declared by Mayor Muriel Bowser) – Go-Go. The band has since recorded several records, including a holiday single with Go-Go legend Sugar Bear. In 2018 and 2019 Elijah led two State Department tours in Russia, and in 2020 Elijah along with his band The EJB Quartet won the DC Jazz Prix International Band competition at DC Jazz Festival. In 2021 Elijah performed at PAPJazz International Jazz Festival in Haiti.
