In Freedom's Name Defenders Days Film Screening

Join us on Defenders’ Day, Tuesday September 12 at the Enoch Pratt Main Library, 6:00pm – 7:45pm. This is a free, multigenerational program.

A Special Defenders Day Event: In Freedom’s Name film

Baltimore National Heritage Area invites you and company to a special Defenders’ Day Program.

On September 12, 1814, Baltimore’s residents, black and white, male, and female, free and enslaved, came together to defend our country from a foreign aggressor. We won. While the War of 1812 has been called “America’s Second War of Independence,” there are some who say that our victory was, in fact, a failure because it did not bring full equality to all men and women. In the end, however, it reflected our resilience and ability to work together to defend our nation. It set the stage for the 207 years that followed. We salute all men and women, black and white, who defend freedom and liberty for ALL.

In commemoration of the Defense of Baltimore in September1814, we request the honor of your presence at a special screening of the film In Freedom’s Name: Maryland’s Black Men and Women and their Defense of Liberty on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, in the Wheeler Auditorium of the Enoch Pratt Central Library 400 Cathedral Street Baltimore, MD 21201, from 6:00 – 7:45 pm.

Made possible by the Maryland Military Historical Society, The Baltimore National Heritage Area, Maryland Heritage Area Authority, and Stevenson University, this film project a complement to the 43-panel exhibit of the same name that is now on display in Annapolis.

Our guest speaker, Major General Janeen L. Birckhead, serves as the 31st Adjutant General of Maryland. In this capacity, MG Birckhead advises the Governor of Maryland. She is responsible for leading a force of over 6,300 National Guard Soldiers and Airmen, and federal and state employees responsible for providing a relevant and capable force ready to fight, protect, defend, and prevail against all threats in a multidomain environment.
