Jesse Rifkin: THIS MUST BE THE PLACE (With Joe Giordano)

The Ivy presents an evening with Jesse Rifkin, author of THIS MUST BE THE PLACE, a fascinating history that examines how real estate, gentrification, community and the highs and lows of New York City itself shaped the city’s music scenes from folk to house music.

Baltimore photojournalist Joe Giordano will join Rifkin in conversation to bring Rifkin’s findings into the Baltimore-specific context. We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be a fascinating discussion!

Jesse Rifkin is a music historian, writer, and tour guide. He is the owner and operator of Walk on the Wild Side Tours NYC, a music history walking tour company in New York City, and consults as a pop music historian for the Association for Cultural Equity. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Conde Nast Traveller, Vice and Fodor’s Travel.

J.M. Giordano is an award-winning photojournalist based in Baltimore and co-host of the photojournalism podcast, 10 Frames Per Second. His book, We Used to Live At Night chronicles 25 years of the city at night. His work has been featured on NPR, ProPublica, Al-Jazeera, GQ, Architectural Digest, Taste, The Observer New Review Sunday Magazine, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Daily Mail, Washington Post, The Baltimore City Paper, i-D Magazine, Discovery Channel Inc. His work, from the Struggle series, is in the permanent collections at the Reginald Lewis Museum. In 2015 he was short-listed for the National Gallery’s Outwin Boochever Portrait Prize and his international photographs covering the collapse of the steel industry are the subject of a solo show at the Museum of Industry in Baltimore In 2023 he was short listed for the Ruby Grants. His new book 13-23: How a Summer of Violence Led to a Decade of Activism is available from Nighted Life Books and local book stores. He was an International Food Photographer of the Year finalist in 2023.
