Leave No Trace Exhibit Opening
Join us for the opening of Evergreen Museum & Library’s newest exhibition, Leave No Trace: John Work Garrett in the American Outdoors. This exhibition will explore the historic relationship between outdoor recreational travelers and the natural landscape they explore. Using objects acquired by Garrett during his lifetime, photographs kept by the family, as well as works by renowned outdoor writers and artists such as John Muir and Frederic Remington, Leave No Trace will examine turn of the twentieth century American conceptions and experience of outdoor recreation. Present-day camping experiences will be juxtaposed against Garrett’s historic experience to draw out themes of preservation movements, perceptions of the value of National Parks, and how outdoor gear has evolved with changes in public outdoor engagement.
The evening will begin with a panel discussion featuring Michelle Fitzgerald, curator at Johns Hopkins University Museums, and Amy Young, Communications Manager at Gunpowder Valley Conservancy. They will discuss the inspiration behind the exhibition and provide an overview of natural history collecting from the past to the present. Afterwards, guests are free to explore the exhibition, enjoy refreshments and mingle.
