About the Event

Join in a free celebration honoring one of history’s greatest visionaries, Martin Luther King Jr. AVAM is open and free from 10 AM-5 PM!

SCHEDULE:

10 AM-12 PM “Unity Canvas: A Collage Tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.” with Artist Wendell Supreme Shannon JRVC 3rd floor

11 AM Abu the Flutemaker drum performance JRVC 1st floor

Fun for all ages!

1 PM Open Mic and Poetry Slam JRVC 3rd floor

Register for our open mic on site, prior to 1 PM, cash prizes awarded.

2 PM Storytime with Author Carole Boston Weatherford JRVC 2nd floor classroom

“Award-winning children’s book author Carole Boston Weatherford will discuss her books and background and share poems inspired by the AVAM exhibition, “If You Build It.” She will also present a choral reading of her book, Be a King: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ‘s Dream and You which encourages young people to build on King’s legacy of service. An activity sheet will invite children to consider how they can serve others.“

3 PM Keur Khaleyi African Dancers JRVC 1st floor

Sharing traditions of African singing, dancing and drumming, Keur Khaleyi performs and invites the audience to participate!

All day: Docent tour guides in the galleries

All day: Explore the galleries with a special scavenger hunt

All day: Collecting new, unopened toiletries and self care items for House of Ruth
