The Writer's Room: Intro to Sketch Comedy Multi-Week Class

The Writer’s Room: Intro to Sketch Comedy!

Learn the fundamentals of sketch comedy and kick your writer’s block to the curb! In this class, you will explore the basics of sketch comedy and pull back the curtain on how the writers on shows like SNL, Key & Peele, and I Think You Should Leave create hilarious, quotable, and iconic sketches.

Over the course of four weeks, you will learn the anatomy of a comedic sketch and will be able pinpoint what makes your favorite sketches so funny. You will explore several well-established sketch comedy structures and themes to provide you with the tools to create your own original sketches!

Class will run for four consecutive Tuesday evenings, 7-9 p.m.: May 14, May 21, May 28 and June 4!

Note: This class involves written work outside of the structured classroom hours.

Sign up today and secure your seat in the writer’s room!

About the instructor:

Jena Frick (she/her) is a Baltimore-based comedian, writer, and performer. She is passionate about storytelling in both written and visual mediums and is happy to have found such a wonderful and diverse arts community in Baltimore. Jena has a long history of performing theater, improv, and stand up but her true calling is sketch comedy. She got her start as a comedy writer at the age of 11 when she got her hands on the family video camera and has never looked back. In 2022, Jena assembled Baltimore’s all-women sketch comedy troupe, Forevermore, and is the acting artistic director and showrunner for the group. Jena holds a B.A. in journalism and broadcasting from James Madison University, where she started the premiere and award-winning sketch comedy troupe, Maddy Night Live. Outside of comedy, Jena is the lead singer for an emo cover band, Guyliner. She also enjoys spending time with her Frenchie and watching campy horror movies.
