A Tour of Canton & Brewers Hill

Canton, and neighboring Brewers Hill, is a waterfront area known for its fun and active personality. Here’s how to make a day of exploring Canton & Brewers Hill.

The heart of Canton is a quaint square rimmed with restaurants, pubs and shops along O’Donnell Street. But wander off O’Donnell Square Park to the surrounding blocks and you’ll find the quintessential Baltimore—from the nearly lost Baltimore art form of painted screens to rows of classic marble stoops on traditional Baltimore brick and Formstone row houses.

Brewers Hill is home to a historic renovation of two original landmark breweries: Gunther and National. You’ll know you’re here when you see the illuminated Mr. Boh sign winking down at you.

Things To Do in Canton & Brewers Hill

With historic charm, modern conveniences and waterfront access, Canton is one of the most desirable destinations in Charm City for visitors and locals. Start your day in the neighborhood at Cafe Dear Leon—the cozy bakery’s one-of-a-kind pastries, breakfast sandwiches and iconic crab dip bagel are constantly going viral on social media. Then, head over to Canton Waterfront Park for a peaceful morning picnic. The green space is a popular place to spectate the Kinetic Sculpture Race and watch the Fourth of July fireworks, and is home to WTMD’s First Thursday concert series.

Next, peruse the shops around O’Donnell Square, from the thoughtfully curated gift store Best Day Ever to the trendy fashion boutique Three Sixty. And don’t sleep on the neighborhood’s Ace Hardware! Beyond the construction and gardening equipment, the store offers craft kits, home goods and holiday decor.

One thing Canton has an abundance of is delicious eateries. Located in the historic Gunther Boiler Building, Gunther & Co. offers a modern American menu that is globally influenced and locally spun. A two-story living wall of plants and an open kitchen create an inviting atmosphere for enjoying brunch, happy hour, or a special-occasion dinner. For a more traditional Baltimore experience, head to the ship-shaped Captain James Landing for a steamed crab feast or Maryland crab cakes. Along Boston Street and in the Can Company, a stretch of harborfront restaurants offers scenic views and easygoing dining, including favorites like Bayside Cantina and Pusser’s Landing. For dessert, stop by Cup Love for authentic Greek frozen yogurt and homemade cupcakes, including vegan and gluten-free options.

Beyond dining, The Shops at Canton Crossing offer a convenient stop with storefronts spanning national retailers and everyday essentials. Recognizable stores like Target, Nordstrom Rack and Ulta Beauty make the open-air center an ideal spot to browse between waterfront plans without straying far from the neighborhood’s core.

Just a short drive or walk away, Brewers Hill adds another layer of activity to the area. The former industrial district has taken on a new identity as a social hub, with spots like Club Volo at Brewers Hill bringing people together for recreational leagues and other events in an easygoing, group-oriented atmosphere.
