July 4, 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As the birthplace of the “Star-Spangled Banner” (and the flag that inspired it!), the nation’s first railroad and countless activists who have helped advance freedoms for all people, Baltimore is the perfect place to celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial. Special museum exhibits and grand events will introduce you to Baltimore’s contributions to American history while envisioning the next 250 years. We look forward to welcoming you next summer!

The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House

See the place where Mary Pickersgill sewed the flag that inspired the National Anthem!

Celebrate a double milestone at the Flag House, marking both its 100th anniversary and America’s 250th. Explore the home where Mary Pickersgill sewed the enormous garrison flag that flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812—the same flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to pen “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Special Exhibit: “Maryland’s America: 250 Years of American History through Marylander Eyes” (July 2026 July 2028)

This groundbreaking exhibit features work from eight Maryland artists, each offering their unique perspective on the evolution of American democracy. Through diverse artistic voices, witness how Marylanders have shaped—and continue to shape—the nation’s story.

Maryland Center for History and Culture

The Maryland Center for History and Culture is more than just a museum. It’s also a library and an educational resource where visitors can learn all about our nation’s history from Maryland’s point of view. Located in the heart of Mount Vernon, this cultural center houses thousands of artifacts and artwork, from scientific instruments to quilts to pieces of jewelry, that tell Maryland’s story.

Discover Maryland’s pivotal role in securing American independence. This compelling exhibit examines the state’s contributions to the Revolutionary War and the ongoing struggle for liberty that continues today. Step into history at Fort McHenry, the birthplace of America’s national anthem. This iconic star-shaped fort famously defended Baltimore during the War of 1812, inspiring Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Today, visitors can explore its rich history through interactive exhibits, guided tours and vibrant reenactments.

Sail250 Maryland & Air Show Baltimore

From June 24-July 1, the Inner Harbor will transform into a spectacular maritime celebration featuring international tall ships, U.S. Navy and Coast Guard vessels, and the legendary U.S. Navy Blue Angels. This free, weeklong event honors the brave men and women who’ve defended our freedoms at sea and in the air for the past 250 years. Sail250 Maryland is part of a five-city national tour, with Baltimore serving as a key stop in this historic flotilla journey from New Orleans to Boston.

The Great Rail Reveal: Opening America’s First Railroad Time Capsule

Witness history unfold as we open a time capsule sealed for nearly 200 years. On July 4, 1828, Charles Carroll of Carrollton—the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence—laid the first stone of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Inside that stone, he placed a time capsule intended for future generations. Join the B&O Railroad Museum on July 4, 2026 to finally discover what treasures lie within, celebrating both the 200th anniversary of American railroading and the 250th anniversary of our nation.

Revolution & Remembrance Bus Tour: Baltimore’s Patriots & the Poe Family for America 250

Journey through Baltimore’s Revolutionary past, where the fight for independence lives on in our streets, headstone and stories.  You’ll visit Westminster Hall & Burying Ground, the resting place of Edgar Allan Poe, General Samuel Smith and James McHenry, as well as Old St. Paul’s Cemetery and Carroll Mansion. The tour also explores the contributions of immigrants, women and working-class heroes like David and Elizabeth Poe to the American Revolution. This immersive experience invites participants to reflect on the diverse individuals who shaped the nation. Tours are led by Poe Baltimore and run from April 11 to September 12, 2026, departing from the Baltimore Visitor Center.

Maryland at 250 Lecture Series

Maryland at 250 is a four-part lecture series on The Values That Shape Us: Freedom, Citizenship, Free Speech and Religion sponsored by the Maryland Center for History and Culture, The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture and the Maryland Four Centuries Project. Join MCHC on May 9 for an in-person lecture with Martha S. Jones, JD, PhD, Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor and Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University, and enjoy an in-depth conversation surrounding birthright citizenship and the 14th Amendment.
