Bilād al-Shām Listening Session presented by Ian Nagoski

A specialist in the recordings made by immigrants to the U.S. in the first half of 20th century, Nagoski will give a talk-and-listening session about recordings made in the U.S. by performers from Greater Syria (Bilād al-Shām) during the period 1913-1965. All proceeds will benefit Baltimore’s Syrian refugee community whose Temporary Protected Status is currently under threat.

Ian Nagoski is an independent music researcher and record producer in Baltimore, Maryland. Over 20 years, he has produced reissues of early 20th century recordings in languages other than English for labels including Dust-to-Digital, Tompkins Square, the Database of Recorded American Music, his own Canary Records, and others. He spoken publicly, telling stories and playing recordings, at the Library of Congress; the Woody Guthrie Center; the Center for Cultural Equity; the Onasis Cultural Center; Brandeis University; New York University; the Universities of Chicago, Pennsylvania, California (LA and Fresno); and hundreds of galleries, festivals, and nightclubs across the U.S. and Europe. He has presented his work in installation at the Museum fur Naturkunde in Berlin, the Wellcome Center in London, and the Peale Center and Jewish Museum of Maryland in Baltimore.
