The month of October is usually associated with the strange and mysterious, and in Baltimore that’s especially true when it comes to “Poe-tober.” October is the perfect time to explore Edgar Allan Poe’s macabre life, his enigmatic death and everything in between with only-in Baltimore exhibitions, events and tours.

Tour Baltimore's Edgar Allan Poe Haunts

Baltimore is the home of Edgar Allan Poe’s final resting place at Westminster Burying Ground, which is open to the public daily during daylight hours (8 a.m. to dusk), as well as his family home, which is now the Poe House and Museum. The refurbished National Historic Landmark, where Poe lived from 1833 to 1835, is open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by special arrangement for groups of 10 or more.

Celebrate Poe's Legacy with Special Events

International Edgar Allan Poe Festival and Awards

Baltimore is hosting the first annual International Edgar Allan Poe Festival and Awards to coincide with Poe’s death day. The free outdoor event will feature Poe-themed performances, art, vendors and food across the street from the Poe House & Museum at 203 N. Amity Street.

VIP Death Weekend Bus Tour of Poe’s Baltimore
Explore the enduring mystery surrounding Poe’s tragic death on a special VIP Death Weekend Bus Tour of Poe’s Baltimore. The 2-hour ticketed tour includes stops at four important Poe Places around Baltimore, including Poe House, Poe’s grave, and the sites where Poe was found and passed away. Tickets also include a special funeral 'viewing' at the historic Carroll Mansion on Lombard Street.

Poe Baltimore’s Annual Black Cat Ball

Poe Baltimore’s annual Black Cat Ball takes place aboard the 'Raven' this. Tickets include a 3-hour harbor cruise aboard the steamship yacht ‘Raven’ starting at the Inner Harbor, a dinner buffet, beer and wine, onboard entertainment, plus a “mystery” Poe gift bag and admission to Poe House. Don your favorite gothic costume to honor Poe and walk the Gothic Red Carpet.

Annual Poe bus tour with Keltz

Throughout October, you can catch performances by David Keltz in character as Poe. Keltz gave his first performance as Edgar Allan Poe on Halloween night in 1991 at Poe's grave. He commands five hours of Poe's poems, short stories, essays, literary criticism, letters and reported conversations. Take the annual Poe bus tour with Keltz which starts at Annabel Lee Tavern, a local pub that pays homage to Poe.
